Questions?
Product
Are the katanas sharp?
The choice is yours! Select a sharpened or unsharpened version from the available options before adding your katana to the cart.
Looking for a display piece? An unsharpened version lets you enjoy the design without a sharpened edge.
Are the katanas forged by hand?
Yes! Our steel katanas are forged by hand by skilled blacksmiths. From shaping the blade to the finishing details, each piece reflects the care and craftsmanship behind its creation.
Are your swords full tang, and what does that mean?
Yes! All our steel swords feature full tang construction, meaning the steel of the blade extends through the handle.
This creates a solid connection between the blade and handle, an important part of a well constructed sword.
Is it legal to own a katana?
Yes, provided it meets the requirements where you live.
Rules vary by country and state, so check your local requirements for ownership and import before ordering. Carrying a katana in public is subject to separate rules.
Uses
Can I use my katana for cutting practice or martial arts?
Yes! We offer models for cutting practice and martial arts, including wooden swords for training.
All our steel swords feature full tang construction. Choose a model designed for your intended practice, with the blade option, size and weight recommended by your instructor.
Can I use my katana for cosplay?
Yes! Our character inspired designs can bring the finishing touch to your costume, whether you’re creating a photoshoot or bringing your favorite character to life.
For conventions, check the organizer’s prop rules first. Metal swords may be restricted even when unsharpened, so choose a material and model accepted by your event.

Hand-Forged Katana Swords — Manga & Japanese Katanas
Welcome to Katana Expert, the largest dedicated katana shop in the United States. We craft authentic hand-forged katana swords for collectors, anime fans, and martial arts enthusiasts. Every blade in our catalog is forged by master craftsmen using traditional Japanese techniques refined over centuries — high-carbon steel, differential hardening, clay tempering, and hand-finished fittings. With over 17 dedicated forging masters and a 600+ katana catalog, we offer the most complete selection of manga katanas and traditional Japanese katanas available online.
Manga Katana
Manga katanas are hand-forged replicas of the legendary blades wielded by iconic anime and manga characters. Each replica is crafted to match the original artwork — from the black Nichirin blade of Tanjiro Kamado to Zoro's Shusui, from Ichigo's Zangetsu to Jin Sakai's katana in Ghost of Tsushima. Our manga katana collection covers the most popular anime universes:
Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Nichirin katanas inspired by Tanjiro, Rengoku, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Giyu, Sanemi, Muichiro, Kanao, Tomioka, and Yoriichi. Each blade features the distinctive coloring of its owner — black, red, yellow, indigo, white — hand-painted by our finishing artisans.
One Piece
Zoro's three swords (Shusui, Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu), Enma, and other iconic blades from the Straw Hat universe.
Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto, Attack on Titan
Ichigo's Zangetsu, Byakuya's Senbonzakura, Yuta Okkotsu's Rika sword, Sasuke's Kusanagi, AOT ODM blades, and many other anime replicas — all hand-forged from real high-carbon steel.
Ghost of Tsushima & Game Replicas
Jin Sakai's katana from Ghost of Tsushima, the Rivers of Blood from Elden Ring, the Sekiro katana, and other video game replicas faithful to their source material.
Japanese Katana
A Japanese katana is a curved, single-edged sword historically wielded by the samurai class during Japan's feudal era. It is recognized by its gentle blade curvature (sori), its single sharp edge, and its long two-handed grip (tsuka). Our traditional Japanese katana collection includes hand-forged pieces ranging from entry-level decorative katanas to high-end battle-ready blades crafted from T10 clay-tempered steel.
Katana Anatomy
Every katana is an assembly of specialized parts, each with its own role and history:
Blade (Nagasa)
The blade typically measures 60 to 80 cm, with a gentle curvature (sori) that allows for fluid cutting motion. Hand-forged from high-carbon steel and shaped through differential hardening to balance strength and flexibility.
Tip (Kissaki)
The tip section, sharpened with precision and often considered the most difficult part of the blade to forge correctly.
Tempering Line (Hamon)
The visible wave-like pattern created during clay tempering, marking the boundary between the hard cutting edge and the more flexible spine.
Guard (Tsuba)
The circular or square guard that protects the wielder's hand. Available in countless patterns — dragons, waves, family crests, anime motifs.
Handle (Tsuka)
The two-handed grip, wrapped in cotton or silk over a rayskin (same) base, decorated with menuki ornaments for both grip and aesthetics.
Scabbard (Saya)
The lacquered wooden sheath that protects the blade and complements its design with painted or carved motifs.
Katana Steel Types
The steel determines the price, durability, and cutting performance of a katana. Our catalog covers the main steel types used in modern katana forging:
1045 Carbon Steel
Entry-level steel, suitable for display katanas and beginners. Affordable and visually authentic.
1060 Carbon Steel
The most popular choice for functional katanas. Balanced hardness and flexibility, capable of light cutting practice (tameshigiri).
1095 Carbon Steel
Higher carbon content for sharper edges and stronger cutting performance. Requires more maintenance to prevent rust.
T10 Tool Steel (Clay-Tempered)
Premium-grade steel used for our top-tier katanas. Clay tempering produces a visible hamon and creates the ideal balance between a razor-sharp edge and a resilient spine.
Damascus / Folded Steel
Multiple steel layers folded and forged together, creating the characteristic wavy pattern. Combines beauty and structural integrity.
Katana Price
Katana prices at Katana Expert start at $119 for decorative entry-level blades and reach over $1,500 for premium hand-forged T10 clay-tempered katanas. The price reflects the steel grade, forging technique, finish quality, and time invested by our craftsmen. Every katana — regardless of price — comes with a lifetime warranty and free US shipping.
Katana History
The word "katana" comes from the Japanese kata (side) and na (name), referring to the way the blade is traditionally worn — edge upward, inserted in the belt. Japanese sword history is divided into five major periods:
Jōkotō Period (until ~900 AD)
The foundational era of Japanese swords, predating the curved katana shape.
Kotō Period (900 – 1596)
The golden age of katana forging. Most legendary surviving blades come from this era.
Shintō Period (1596 – 1780)
The era that refined and standardized the katana shape known today.
Shinshintō Period (1781 – 1876)
Forging techniques evolved to make katanas more efficient and accessible.
Gendaitō Period (1876 – present)
The modern era. Today's hand-forged katanas — including every blade in our catalog — follow Gendaitō techniques while remaining faithful to traditional craftsmanship.
