Types of Japanese swords

  • Katana: the long, curved sword of the samurai, with a blade over 60 cm (about 24 in). See all katana swords.
  • Wakizashi: the short companion sword, with a blade between 30 and 60 cm.
  • Tanto: a dagger with a blade under 30 cm (about 12 in).
  • Tachi: the older, more curved sword, worn edge-down from the belt.
  • Ninjato: a straight-bladed sword tied to the ninja in film and anime.

How to choose a Japanese sword

Use first. Display piece, cutting practice or a set for your wall? Most models come sharpened or not sharpened.

Steel second. T10 with a genuine hamon gives a hard edge and a flexible spine. Damascus shows a folded, layered pattern. 1095 is a high carbon steel. Manganese steel keeps the price down.

Then the look. Classic black, dragon motifs, a plain shirasaya or a historical name. Pick what you want to see every day.
